1465752 Comminuting apparatus J MORITZ 6 March 1974 [6 March 1973] 10097/74 Heading B2A - A comminuting apparatus comprises a horizontal drum 1 mounted between two end frames 13, 14 a shaft or shafts 4, 5, Fig. 2 supporting a roller or rollers 2, 3 within the drum and resilient means, e.g. jacks 41, 42 or springs or weights, to press the roller or rollers against the drum. The surface over which the or each roller rolls is frustoconical or concave in profile, and the or each roller has a complementary profile so that substantially the whole of its length is applied to the internal surface of the drum. The drum is rotatable via a gear box 25, motor 24 and ring gears 27, Fig. 1, and is radially supported by rollers 31....34 which have e.g. tyres to reduce noise. Material is supplied to the mill via a duct 51 which has two distribution ports 52, 53. Discharge is via an opening 55 Fig. 2 and a duct 56. In operation the rollers cooperate with grinding rings 37 within the drum 1. Modifications include two pairs of roller shafts with linkages ensuring higher pressures from rollers 2, Fig. 4, than rollers 3. Convex or frusto conical rollers may be used, Figs. 5 and 6. A sinusoidal-patterned surface 59, Fig. 8, on a roller may be used to cause material to be moved alternately left and right during grinding. A drum 1 with side members 11, 12 Fig. 9 may be used for grinding in liquids. Slurry is discharged via an outlet 67 into a hopper 68.
