Abstract
1465664 Process for the preparation of terephthalic and isophthalic acid TEIJIN Ltd 8 Sept 1975 [10 Sept 1974] 36838/75 Heading C2C Terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid is prepared by oxidizing para- or meta-xylene in the liquid phase with a molecular oxygen-containing gas in a C 2 -C 4 aliphatic carboxylic acid, e.g. acetic acid in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst, e.g. cobalt or manganese compounds or mixtures thereof, wherein the para- or metaxylene is introduced into the liquid phase of the reaction system while it is entrained by a gas. The xylene may be entrained in the form of vapour by the entraining gas which may be a molecular oxygen-containing gas such as air and pure molecular oxygen with other inert gases such as nitrogen, CO 2 , or argon or any non-reactive gas in the oxidation reaction such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium or argon. The oxidation may be carried out in the presence of bromine or a bromine compound. Examples are described with the aid of a flow diagram.
