Abstract
146,552. Mayrow, J. J. Aug. 29, 1919. Bodies.-A frame member for road and railway vehicles is formed from two longitudinally corrugated trough-shaped metal strips with flanges bent to lie in one plane, the flanges of the two sections being secured together with one strip nested within the other. A plate may be secured over the open side. Such frame members are combined to form beams, pillars, and ribs of vehicle bodies such as omnibuses. Figs. 1 and 2 show two members secured together at rightangles by gusset plates H riveted to the flanges of the members, each of which is formed of two corrugated strips A, B nested together and provided with a cover-plate G. Hollow rivets may be used for connecting the parts together. Fig. 4 shows a joint between a pillar L and beam N when a right-angled corner is required. Two plates S, T are bent over the end of the beam N, the plate T having a cut-out part U against which the pillar L is placed. A plate V having a channel part engaging the pillar L is secured over the plates S, T and filling-pieces Ware inserted between the flanges of the pillar and of the plate V. A modiiied frame member is described in which the larger trough has two corrugations instead of three, as shown in Fig. 1, and the centres of the troughs are in contact.
