Abstract

1460444 Bookbinding REDWOOD BURN GROUP Ltd 21 Jan 1974 [23 Jan 1973] 3499/73 Heading B6A In a method of and apparatus for binding perforated sheets together using a binding element consisting of interconnected wire rings, Fig. 2, a binding element strip 22 is fed, with its rings open, to a reception station A where a binding element of predetermined length is cut from the strip, the element then being conveyed to a binding station B where the rings are closed into the perforations in a pile 72 of sheets. The strip 22, wound on a reel 18 supported on four driven rollers 20, is fed over a counterbalanced tray 24 and engaged on projections 26 on an endless conveyer chain 28. When the chain, which is driven via a magnetic clutch 32, has pulled the loop of strip running from the reel taut, the loop falls from the tray, actuating the rollers 20 which unreel more strip until the loop again rests on the tray. When a predetermined length of strip has been fed to the reception station A, as sensed by a counter, and an indexing wheel and pawl arrangement, the magnetic clutch is disengaged and a cutter 48 is traversed to cut the length from the strip. This element is then pushed across a ribbed guide 56 and on to a magnetic and ribbed carrier bar 60 by a pusher bar 54. Finally, a tool descends to align and open out the rings to the exact extent necessary, and the bar 60 is turned through 90 degrees to present the element to the binding station B where tools 70 close the rings on to the pile 72.
