Abstract

1,208,745. Attaching articles to strips. GENERAL BINDING CORP. 8 Dec., 1967 [6 April, 1967], No.56025/67. Heading B8C. Binding elements of the type having a back. bone with transversely projecting fingers are joined by one or more pressure-sensitive tapes extending substantially perpendicularly to the bindings. The resulting strips may either be folded in two or wound with the bindings on the outside. In the machine illustrated the bindings are guided by thin vertical bars 30, which they straddle, so that they slide on to portions 31 of the bars pivoted at 32. The portions 31 are oscillated between the two positions illustrated so that a pair of projections 33, 34 serves as an escapement mechanism to pass the bindings singly and to locate them successively in contact with a pressure-sensitive tape 21 carried on a drum 38. The drum 38 is moved in steps to feed the tape by a ratchet mechanism operated in synchronism with the movement of the bar portions 31 so that the bindings are secured to the tape at spaced intervals. A counter may cause the tape to be cut each time a predetermined number of bindings has been secured. In an alternative construction (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) the fingers on the bindings take into the spaces between thin endless conveying belts (17) which carry the bindings beneath a roller (20) guiding the pressure-sensitive tape. The tape is moved more slowly than the conveyer belts so that the bindings are pushed into close engagement.
