Abstract

1458016 Ternary alloy LUCAS BATTERIES Ltd 30 May 1974 [6 June 1973] 27013/73 Headings C7A and C7D A ternary lead alloy suitable for the cast grids of lead-acid batteries containing 0À05-0À12% Ca and 0À005-0À1% Al is made by melting and stirring a binary alloy of Pb and Al in air or other oxidizing atmosphere with sufficient excess of Al present to form a layer of aluminium oxide on the melt surface. Ca melat or hydride is then added below the oxide film, and the melt further agitated without rupturing the film to produce the ternary alloy without loss of Ca by oxidation. Compositional adjustments may be made by remelting the ingotted alloy with further lead prior to casting into the required shapes.
