Abstract
1414171 Lead base alloy JOSEPH LUCAS (BATTERIES) Ltd 9 Feb 1973 [9 Feb 1972] 6103/72 Heading C7A [Also in Division H1] A battery plate grid for a lead-acid battery is formed of an alloy of lead, calcium and one of gallium, hafnium, indium, niobium, silicon, tantalum, titanium, yttrium or zirconium. The third element is capable of being oxidized to produce a coherent, protective oxide film having a larger negative free energy of formation than that of calcium oxide so that the grid may be satisfactorily cast in air without the disadvantageous oxidortion of calcium during the casting. In an example the alloy consists of lead with 0.05 per cent-0.12 per cent, preferably 0.07 per cent- 0.09 per cent, by weight calcium and 0.005 per cent-0.1 per cent, preferably 0.01 per cent- 0.03 per cent, by weight silicon, titanium, yttrium or gallium. In a further example the alloy consists of lead with the same proportions of calcium as in the first example and 0.002 per cent-0.05 per cent, preferably 0.005 per cent-0.015 per cent, by weight hafnium, indium, niobium, tantalum or zirconium.
