Abstract
1457175 Refining metals W WUTH 8 Feb 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 05951/74 Heading C7D In a method of removing impurities from molten metals, such as copper, oxygen or oxygen enriched air reaction gas is blown on to the metal surface from at least one gas jet, mounted approximately perpendicularly to the molten metal surface, with such a force that the melt rotates in a torus-like manner, bringing fresh metal from the bath depth to the surface where it can react with the gas. The reaction rate is determined by the jetpressure and the nozzle-to-bath distance, and optimum results are achieved where these two factors are adjusted so that minimal splashing occurs. Approximate values for blast impression depths for oxidizing and reducing copper are given as 1À8 and 1À5 cms. respectively, and the use of convergent/divergent nozzles instead of the normal convergent nozzles is recommended.
