Abstract
145,696. Collin Akt.-Ges. zur Verwertung von Brennstoffen und Metallen, F. J. May 17, 1919, [Convention date]. Ammonium sulphate.-Gases containing cyanogen or hydrocyanic acid are treated, after the separation of ammonia, with steam and sulphuric acid to convert the cyanogen into ammonium sulphate. In the case of gases containing a high percentage of cyanogen, such as gas produced by the carbonization of beet waste, after the absorption of the ammonia, and the addition of steam, the gases are passed by an inlet 1 into an apparatus containing bell chambers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and baffles 11 and issue at 12. Sulphuric acid enters at 7 and issues at 13, and steam for heating enters at 9 and leaves at 10. When the gases contain a small quantity of cyanogen compounds, they may be washed with water and the ammonia liquor obtained distilled, the vapours being then washed with acid to remove ammonia and then treated as above descrbed. The vapours from the distilling column may be used for heating the apparatus before entering the saturator, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In Fig. 2 the ammoniacal vapours enter at 14, pass through the jacket 8, and thence by a connexion 15 pass to the saturator. The gases leave the saturator at 17 and pass by the inlet 18 through the bell-chambers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and escape at 12. Sulphuric acid is supplied at 7 and is fed to the saturator by way of a connexion 19. In Fig. 3 the bell-chamber apparatus is shown arranged inside the saturator. The presence of sulphuretted hydrogen in the gas mixture facilitates the conversion of cyanogen into ammonia, and this gas may be added if not already present. Specification 5898/84 is referred to.
