Abstract

1456385 Workpiece transferring; welding by pressure CLARKE-CHAPMAN Ltd 18 Feb 1974 [11 April 1973] 17531/73 Headings B3B and B3R [Also in Division B8] Workpieces 10 are transferred in pallets 12 on a first conveyer 16 to mechanical handling equipment which transfers each workpiece 10 to a machine tool such as a friction welding machine or a lathe 14, each workpiece 10 being gripped initially in a vertical orientation about its longitudinal axis "B" by one of two grippers 30, 32 and the gripper is then rotated through 90 degrees about an axis (C) which is spaced from the workpiece axis B, prior to insertion of the workpiece in the machine tool 14, Fig. 1 (not shown). The grippers 30, 32 are mounted on a column 34 extending downwardly from a carriage 36 which is movable along the beam 38 of a gantry support having legs 40. The grippers 30, 32 are independently movable horizontally relative to the column 34 by means of rams 42, and the column 34 can be raised and lowered relative to the carriage 36.
