Abstract

1456034 Porous bricks/ceramic material G A H VAN INGEN 10 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 57107/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division D1] Porous ceramic articles are made by mixing a coal-containing slate and/or fly ash containing coal with a borate or a compound which forms a borate when burnt, shaping the mixture to the desired form and drying and burning the shaped product so that the borate content in the finished article expressed as fused sodium borate is 0À5 to 5% by weight of the dry mixture weight. Preferably the slate and/or fly ash is selected to lose at least 15% by weight during burning. The preferred borate is borax, and the borate forming compound may be boric acid or its anhydride. One face of the shaped and burnt article may be impregnated with a concentrated borate solution (approximately 30% solution), the article is dried with the impregnated face uppermost and then baked. Preferably, the impregnated face has a B 2 O 3 : SiO 2 ratio of from 5 to 15%.
