Abstract
1454674 Mercury tensiometer L SAVVIDES 18 June 1974 27036/74 Heading G1S A mercury tensiometer for measuring the moisture suction of soil comprises an outer body 1 for containing water, the outer body having a water permeable part 4, and a measuring unit 2 dispersed within the outer body, the measuring unit comprising a closed inner body 6 containing a pool of mercury 7, a capillary tube 8 immersed at its lower end in the mercury and communicating at its upper end with the outer body, and a tube 9 connecting the inner body to atmosphere. As shown, the measuring unit 2 is suspended from stopper 5 by the tube 9. The outer and inner bodies and the tube 8 are preferably of transparent plastics material. In use, the outer body is filled with water, and the measuring unit inserted. As the stopper is pushed into position, water from the outer body is forced down tube 8 to displace air therefrom. Any water entering the inner body may be removed - through tube 9 by turning the tensiometer upside down. The lower end of the tensiometer is placed in the soil, and the height to which the mercury rises in tube 8 in a predetermined time is measured.
