1454314 Laminates CLARO PLASTICS Ltd 13 May 1975 14 [May 1974] 21238/74 Heading B5N A tarpaulin comprises a sheet of flexible thermoplastics material, e.g. low density polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, integrally reinforced with strips of webbing, which are elongate bands of material having a high width to thickness ratio, which extend in an open mesh over substantially the whole of the sheet and are bonded to the sheet and to one another, each webbing strip comprising a plurality of thermoplastics, metallic or inorganic yarns enclosed in a thermoplastics casing. The tarpaulin may be produced by laying strips of webbing across a sheet of flexible thermoplastics material, suitably by placing the sheet over the strips placed in grooves in a flat table to form the required mesh pattern, heating the sheet and webbing, e.g. using a plate in the form of a matrix of aluminium bars which corresponds to the mesh pattern of the strips and heated to above 160‹ C., removing the source of heat and before the temperature of the sheet has dropped by more than 50‹ C., applying pressure exceeding 0À1 psi to bond the webbing to the sheet, e.g. using a plate in the form of a matrix of aluminium bars corresponding to the mesh pattern of the strips, the means for applying pressure being at a temperature not greater than 50‹ C. The webbing strips may comprise bundles of reinforcing yarns, e.g. of polyamide, polyester or cellulose material, or reinforcing yarns interwoven into an open scrim, enclosed in a casing of low density polyethylene. The webbing strips may extend in two directions at right angles to one another parallel to the edges of the sheet. Points of attachment, e.g. lugs or grommets may be provided at spaced locations in the webbing strips. The tarpaulin may comprise two sheets of flexible thermoplastics material with webbing strips sandwiched between, and may include insulating materials between them, and may be fused together around a network of filaments additional to the webbing strips.
