Abstract
1452703 Packaging in sachets ALFA LAVAL AB 15 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 21634/74 Heading B8C [Also in Divisions A2 F1 and F4] A liquid, for example milk, is packaged by enclosing it in a tube moving through a heating zone and pinching the tube containing the thus treated material along spaced transverse lines to form filled sachets. The tube is flattened to an elongated cross-section as it passes through the heating zone and the liquid is made to flow faster than the speed of the tube in that zone. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 a film 3 from roll 2 is introduced through rollers 4 into housing 1. Liquid 8 to be packaged is fed from pipe 7 into a trough formed by the film and the film sealed together at its upper edge by discs 5 to form a tube enclosing the material. The tube is fed by frictional engagement with belt 9 through heating equipment 12 (see Figs. 3, 4 and 5) (not shown) and exits from the housing through rolls 13 into a device (14) for forming transverse seals (15). Individual sachets are separated by cutters (see arrows 16). The liquid being packaged is forced through the tube at a speed greater than that of the tube by a pump 11 comprising a rotating cylindrical array of freely rotating rollers which co-operate successively with belt 9. The pumping action may be enhanced by applying an overpressure to the housing or by appropriately modifying the equipment 12 to apply peristaltic type pressure to the tube. In a second embodiment, see Fig. 6, liquid is introduced through pipe 49 to the inside of a freshly extruded tube 47 which is passed downwardly through a first air heating chamber 40, a second dwell chamber 41, and a third cooling chamber 42, to a sachet forming device 56, 57. The material flows by gravity, perhaps supplemented by an overpressure, through the tube and the tube is appropriately shaped by supporting members 54 perhaps of wire netting. In a variation of this embodiment the chamber 40 may be replaced by one in which the material is microwave heated.
