Abstract

1280517 Packaging food products; endless chain conveyers FMC CORP 8 Oct 1969 [31 Oct 1968] 49462/69 Headings B8A and B8C [Also in Division A2] Means for purging the air space and of reducing the head space in a partially filled container having an unsealed mouth comprises a carrier for the container having means for applying tension across the mouth of the container so as to provide a one-way valve, at least one trough, guide means to guide the carrier along a vertical path downwardly and upwardly through at least one liquid bath in the trough and means to heat the liquid in the bath. As shown, containers 22 carrying a food product and made from a heat sealable laminated film material having an open mouth 36, are fed at a feeding station F into chamber PC of a housing 40 containing boiling water W and thence into a cooking chamber C containing boiling water W and saturated steam at 212‹ F. introduced through an inlet 56b. Thereafter the containers are hermetically sealed by a mechanism 57 and are then moved under cooling sprays 58 to a discharge station D. The containers are moved through the apparatus by an endless chain conveyer 55, the containers being mounted on carriers 82 suspended between a pair of chains 60, 62 of the conveyer. Each carrier includes a base 84 and pairs of spring arms 86 carrying clamps 88 to which the mouths 36 of the containers are attached and by means of which the mouths are tensioned to provide a one way valve at the mouth of each container. Each container is clamped to the base 84 by a clamp 90. In operation movement of the containers through the chamber PC in the direction shown, progressively diminishes the size of the headspace and reduces the amount of air as well as the gases formed during the cooking process, so that the headspace is filled with substantially pure water vapour or steam when the containers move into the chamber C where they are further heated by steam and periodically immersed in water W thereby hydrostatic pressure acting on the containers purges them of the cooking gases. In another embodiment Fig. 9 (not shown), the containers are moved successively into hot and cold troughs and finally into a hot water cooking trough. Specification 1,212,790 is referred to.
