Abstract

1452654 Compressing non-woven bicomponent fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 July 1975 [25 July 1974 5 Aug 1974] 32874/74 and 34329/74 Heading B5A A moulded, bonded, non-woven, fibrous product is formed by taking an open web of heat stabilized, crimped fibres, at least 20 wt. per cent of which are bondable bicomponent fibres having a first polymer component and a second polymer component integral therewith along at least a portion of its length, subjecting the web to a heat treatment at a temperature above (preferably, less than 15‹ C. above) the softening temperature of the second but below the softening point of the first polymer component to effect interfibre bonding, compressing the web to the desired shape and density while maintaining, the heat treatment, and then causing or permitting the moulded product to cool. Suitably a compression ratio in the range 2 : 1 to 9 : 1 is used. Particles, e.g. active carbon, ionexchange resin, may be incorporated in the web; alternatively, the web may be coated or partially or completely impregnated with a synthetic resin to form a reinforced article.
