Abstract

1,019,984. Cigarette filters. CIGARETTE COMPONENTS Ltd. July 31, 1963 [Aug. 3, 1962], No. 30015/62. Heading A2C. A method of manufacturing smoke filters comprises blending together 10-90% of "long" fibres (exceeding 1 inch staple) of viscose cellulose acetate or cotton and 90- 10% of "short" fibres (1.25 cm. staple or less) of mechanical or chemical wood pulp, sisal, waste textile such as linters or cellulose acetate, forming the blended fibres into a thin loosely coherent web condensing the web to a sliver and thereafter subjecting the sliver to conventional plug making operations, the fibres, after being formed into the web being bonded together at points of contact distributed along their lengths. To effect bonding powdered synthetic resin is dusted on to the web after the web has been lightly sprayed by means of an airless spray unit with a polymeric solution, e.g. dilute sodium carboxy methyl cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol to aid the retention of the powdered resin. The amount of powdered resin used depends on the "short" fibre content of the web. The web may be conveniently split into two and is brought into sliver form by garnitures. The sliver is preheated to fix the powdered resin in a tunnel heater from which it emerges in a coherent cylinder form which is coiled and placed in a can and taken to a plug making machine. Bonding is finally effected by heating the plugs in a high frequency heater. The powdered resin may be polyvinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate co-polymer or a polyester resin. In a modification the resin may be applied to the web in the form of a slurry which is sprayed on to the web by means of a spinning disc.
