1452271 Magnetic separation ENGLISH CLAYS LOVE RING POCHIN & CO Ltd 22 Oct 1973 [23 Oct 1972] 48811/72 Heading B2JApparatus for separating magnetic particles from a fluid comprises a chamber defined by a tube I provided with an inlet and an outlet for the fluid; a porous packing 3 constituted by a multiplicity of elongate ferromagnetic particles formed each with a plurality of fin-like or spine-like projections (Fig. 3, not shown) and arranged in the chamber; and an electromagnet 6 for establishing a magneic field in the region of the chamber occupied by the packing. An outlet tap 4 and a porous glass support 2 for the packing 3 may also be provided. The ferromagnetic particles may be produced by a milling operation on a block of corrosion-resistant ferrous alloy, e.g. stainless steel or iron of martensitic and/or ferritic form. In use, a non- homogeneous field with a very large number of points of high magnetic field concentration is established in the inter-particle spaces of the packing and the specification explains why this is particularly advantageous when the material to be separated from the fluid is only weakly magnetic. After use, the packing may be demagnetised, e.g. by an appropriately applied alternating magnetic field, and cleared of collected particles by flushing with water.
