Abstract

1377511 Magnetic separators PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 April 1972 [25 June 1971] 29940/71 Heading B2J A magnetic filter comprises a non-magnetic tubular housing 1, e.g. of stainless steel or P.V.C.; a plurality of strips 11 of magnetisable material arranged to form filtering grids with zig-zag paths for the flow of fluid through the housing; mild steel pole plates 3, 4, between which the housing is held, which incorporate slotted gratings 7, 8 of soft iron, and which are connected by soft-iron yokes 5, 6; flanged pipe connections 9, 10; and energising coils 2 which surround the housing 1. In use, current is passed through the coils 2 to magnetise the strips 11, and ferromagnetic contaminants in the fluid flowing through housing 1 are trapped in the gaps 17. When it is desired to clean the filter the strips 11 are demagnetised by switching off the current and the fluid flow is reversed to flush out the filtering grids.
