Abstract

1451684 Rotary presses; sheet-turning MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG AG 18 Jan 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 02593/74 Heading B6C Two printing units of a rotary press are connected by a transfer cylinder, the second impression cylinder being provided with two sets of co-operating gripper systems so that a sheet can be turned for printing on both sides. In one embodiment, a two-colour press includes respective printing units made up of forme cylinders 1, 2. Offset cylinders 3, 4 and impression cylinders 5, 6 with an intermediate sheet transfer cylinder 7. When printing on one side only a sheet 10, Fig. 1 (not shown), is conveyed by grippers 14 on cylinder 5, grippers 15 on cylinder 7 and grippers 20 on cylinder 6, each cylinder being provided with respective second rows of grippers 13, 16 and 18 for a second sheet; when it is required to print on the other side of the sheet, grippers 15 retain a sheet 10 past its delivery position to cylinder 6 until its trailing edge is engaged by grippers 17, Fig. 2; grippers 17 and 18 then swing towards each other and the trailing edge is transferred to grippers 18 while grippers 15 are released so that the sheet passes through the second printing unit in the opposite sense Fig. 4 (not shown). Air blast or suction devices 21 lift the sheet 10 away from transfer cylinder 17 and prevent setoff occurring, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
