Abstract

1449883 Adhesive coated products A R LAVENDER 31 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1973] 41157/73 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B4 and B5] A water-insoluble pressure-sensitive adhesive coating on a carrier, the coating being protected by a non-adhesive water-absorbent or water-soluble release liner, is exposed for use by the application of water to the liner and stripping the liner. After removal, the presence of water prevents immediate development of full adhesive properties and thus permits repositioning of the carrier. The liner may be regenerated cellulose, gelatin, tissue paper, woven or non-woven fabric, e.g. cotton, or particulate material, e.g. table salt, sodium bicarbonate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrollidone, hydroxyethyl cellulose or corn starch. The adhesive, which may cover the whole or part only, e.g. the edges, of the carrier, may be based on silicone, silicone/gum, polyurethane, acrylics or rubber, and is dried after application. The carrier may be of metal, wood, paper, fabric or synthetic resin film and may constitute a tile, wallpaper, structural member, decalcomanie or indicia-carrying sheet. In one embodiment, the carrier is a plastics netting having the adhesive on both faces and penetrating the interstices thereof; if the netting may be omitted so that the carrier comprises one of the two release liners. Exemplified carriers are regenerated cellulose liner, aluminium, steel, polyester, polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyethylene, fluorocarbon resins, cellulose acetate, kraft paper and decorative paper laminates. Many examples of laminates which can be made after removal of the liner are given.
