Abstract

1449464 Distribution systems for natural gas EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 1 Feb 1974 [21 Feb 1973] 8443/73 Heading F4X A method of distributing natural gas comprises admixing with the natural gas a cheap diluent gas (e.g. flue gas, engine exhaust gas, or if cheaply available, nitrogen or hydrogen) at a pressure lower than the pipeline distributing pressure, and at one or more locations at or near the gas consumers. The said location(s) is preferably no further upstream from the consumers than the point where the pipeline pressure is reduced to the consumer network value. In Fig. 2, natural gas streams A, B, C at high pressure and of differing qualities (e.g. rich natural gas and lean natural gas) are mixed without dilution in a pipeline 15 from which the mixture is passed via pressure reducers 16, 17, 18 to medium pressure pipelines 19, 20, 21. Thereafter the gas flows via pressure reducers 23 to the local distribution network 22 for consumers. In the vicinity of, or incorporated in, the pressure reducers 23 are venturi mixers 24 through which the cheap diluent gas is introduced to the natural gas mixture. The amount of diluent gas so introduced is regulated to maintain a constant quality of gas to the consumer.
