Abstract

Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.-In apparatus of the type in which pumps carried in a casing on one shaft are operated by means on a second shaft to pump liquid round a circuit which may be more or less restricted, the casing is divided into separate high and low pressure compartments, to and from which respectively liquid is pumped. A shaft 4 carries a casing 1 divided into a high-pressure compartment 9 and lowpressure compartment 2. Between these compartments is formed a series of cylinders 7 with sleeves 11 carrying outlet-valves 12, and spring- pressed pistons 17 with inlet valves 19 and ports 20. The piston heads 18 bear on a loose plate 27 carried by a member 21 keyed to the second shaft 5, rollers 26 being interposed between the oblique front face of the member 21 and plate 27. Between the high and low pressure compartments is a passage 10, 33 in which is mounted a sleeve 35 with tapering openings 36 and valve 37 with ports 39. The valve 37 is operated bv a rod 30 passing axially down the shaft 5. With the valve 37 open, rotation of either shaft causes the pump pistons to reciprocate and the second shaft remains at rest. On restricting the flow of liquid, the second shaft is caused to rotate, at a relative speed dependent on the amount the valve 37 is closed.
