Abstract

1447497 Two-part couplings G & H TECHNOLOGY Inc 13 Aug 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 38295/73 Heading H2E In a two-part plug and socket connector the contacts of one part are movable within their part between a first position in which they engage the contacts of the other part and a second position in which they do not engage the other part contacts while the two parts are mated, said one part comprising a set of mating screw threads which by a partial rotation thereof effect the movement of the contacts. The socket 16 comprises a shell 20 with circumferentially spaced keys 98 and contacts (not shown) mounted in insulators 28, 30. The plug 18 comprises a shell 54 with keyways 100, contact pins 71 mounted in insulators 66, 68, and a sleeve 104 having keyways 114 in an end flange 106 and screw-threadably mounted on the shell 54. In use, the socket shell 20 enters the sleeve 104 and plug shell 54, keys 98 passing through the keyways 100, 114 until the flange 106 abuts a flange 21 on the socket, the sleeve is then given a part rotation to bring the flange 106 behind the keys 98 (thus locking the plug to the socket) and to advance the shell 54 within the sleeve and mate the pin contacts 71 with the socket contacts. Resilient seals 34, 72 (78) are present, seal (78) being held in a slotted (92) rim 90; liners 50, 80 are connected to the screens of cables 12, 14. The socket is bolted to a bulkhead 22. The keys 98 vary in width and spacing to ensure correct orientation of the plug and socket. A compression spring 120 acts between the shell and a collar 122 on the sleeve 104; alternatively (Fig. 8, not shown) a torsion spring (122) is secured at one end in a cammed recess (128) on the shell 54 and the other end to the sleeve. The plug may additionally include resilient fingers which lock with the aid of a collet behind a ridge 95; see Specification 1,447,499.
