Abstract

1,114,466. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. 29 Nov., 1966 [14 Dec., 1965], No. 53370/66. Heading H2E. A multipin connector comprising two cylindrical connector parts 2, 4 surrounding sectional dielectric inserts 8, 10 &c., mounting contact members 18, 18<SP>1</SP>, incorporates a locking ring 30, having internal grooves 38 leading to holes 42, rotatably mounted on shell member 6, the grooves 38 and holes 42 engaging pins 40 on shell member 61 when parts 2 and 4 are interengaged and locked by rotating the locking ring 30 in a clockwise direction (as viewed in Fig. 2). Correct polarity of the connector is ensured by interfitting keys 27 and keyways 29. The locking ring 30 is biased rearwardly of shell member 6 by a flat circular sinuous spring 36 located between a flange 31 on shell member 6 and a washer 34 over which teeth 32 of the looking ring 30 are bent inwardly, the biasing means bringing raised shoulders 46, 48, 50 on the internal surface of the locking ring into contact with co-operating shoulders 52, 55 and plane surfaces 54, 56 on the radially extending lateral face of flange 31 so as to form a ratchet assembly with a plurality of latching positions, each corresponding to the starting positions of the pins 40 in the forward end of grooves 38. With the parts 2, 4 held in complete engagement the pins 40 are located in the holes 42 holding the locking ring 30 with the ratchet assembly disengaged thereby allowing disengagement of the connector parts 2, 4 when desired by anticlockwise motion of the locking ring 30.
