Abstract

1447307 Photographic silver halide emulsions FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 9 May 1974 [11 May 1973] 20641/74 Heading G2C Photographic silver halide emulsions contain a hydrophilic binder and silver halide crystals of which more than 30 wt per cent are irregular, have only one trimming plane and have boundary planes with the binder comprising a (100), plane, a (111) plane or mixed (100) and (111) plants. The emulsions are more highly monodisperse, have a higher optical sensitization rate and form a more sensitive direct-positive emulsion then prior art emulsions and are prepared by single or double jet precipitation provided one or more of the following conditions is satisfied:- (1) in the twin jet method, the silver ion concentration must be kept in the range of from the equivalence point to #p Ag = 1; (2) the concentrations of silver nitrate and halide solutions must be in the range of from 2-normal to saturation; (3) in the initial stage of precipitation, no silver halide solvent must be present; and (4) mixing of silver nitrate and halide solutions must be rapid so that near the equivalence point the change of silver ion concentration (#E Ag) is less than 2mV. Alternatively, the irregular grains used in the present emulsions may be separated from conventional emulsions by centrifuge. Examples include the preparation of a directpositive emulsion.
