Abstract
1447081 Two-part couplings BUNKER RAMO CORP 13 Nov 1973 [21 Nov 1972] 52701/73 Heading H2E A coupling part comprises two dielectric bodies 231, 237 rotatable relatively to each other about the longitudinal axis of the coupling from a non-actuated to an actuated setting, a plurality of apertures 238 extending through body 237 and into body 231 for receiving the ends of insulated wires 239, guide slots 236 extending transversely to and intersecting respective apertures contacts 241 mounted on the body 231 each having a terminal portion 248 within a respective guide slot 236, such that rotation to the actuated setting causes the portions 248 to pierce the insulation, and locking means for locking the two bodies in the actuated setting. In the Figure, the conductor-receiving slots 238 are in two parts and the body 237 is mounted for limited rotation about a shaft 243 on the body 231. In use, the body 237 is assembled on the shaft with the slot parts 238A, 238B aligned and the insulated conductor ends 239 inserted in the slot parts. The body 237 is then rotated about the shaft carrying the conductor ends into engagement with the insulation piercing terminal portions 248 of the contacts 241 which are in passages 233 in the surface of the part 231. The contacts 241 have contact element (242, Fig. 16) which abut identical contact elements in a complementary connector (330, Fig. 20). A key (244) slides along a keyway 245 to engage a slot 246 and the two bodies are locked together by a housing 251 which fits over the bodies 231, 237 in the actuated position. A further embodiment (Figs. 8-11) discloses a tapered extension (465) to the shaft (464) on which the body (437) rotates, the extension serving to separate and grip the individual insulated conductors of the cable. Further, the socket housing (450) has a hollow cylindrical body (451) extending beyond the body (431) and holding on its inner surface bridging contacts (456) each connecting with a respective contact (441) mounted in the insert and with an identical contact (441) of a complementary plug which is inserted into the hollow body (451).
