Abstract

1446797 Bipolar electrodes HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 31 Oct 1974 [14 Nov 1973] 47251/74 Heading C7B A bipolar electrode comprises a cathodic layer of Cu coated with a Pt group metal or oxide, an intermediate layer of a valve metal (e.g. Ti, Nb or Ta) and an anodic layer of a Pt group metal or oxide, the latter at least partially covering the valve metal. The electrode may be made by coating a Cu plate of “-¢" thickness with the valve metal e.g. by ion deposition, sputtering or metallurgical bonding to a thickness of > 50 micro inches, followed by application of the anodic layer by ion deposition, electro-plating or thermal decompo sition of a compound followed, if required by oxidation of the metal so deposited. A layer of Pt, Pt and Ru or Ru 2 O 3 is specified. The production of chlorate from alkali metal chloride is specified.
