Abstract

1444091 Boots etc R GRIGGS & CO Ltd 6 Nov 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 52429/72 Heading A3B An article of footwear includes an upper 11 formed with an inwardly directed marginal portion 12 around its perimeter, an outer sole 28 moulded onto the margin portion 12 and being formed with a cavity 14 in the sole region, a resilient cushion 15 located in the cavity 14 and a removable sock 13 extending over the cushion 15 and seating on the marginal portion 12 of the upper. The resilient cushion 15 may be made of foamed plastics material or rubber. The outer sole 28 may also be provided with cavities 17, 20 in the waist and heel regions respectively, the cavities 17, 20 being formed with ribs or bars 18, 21 whose top ends are coplanar with the upper surface o!f the outer sole 28. The shoe is made by string lasting the upper 11 on a conventional last, transferring the upper 11 to a last (not shown) having projections on the sole plate which correspond to the cavities 14, 17, 20 and injection moulding the outer sole 28 onto the lasted upper. The last is then removed, the cushion 15 is placed in the cavity 14 and the removable sock 13 is inserted into the shoe through the opening 16.
