Abstract

1443987 Preparation of 2 - hydroxynaphthalene - 3 - carboxylic acid BASF AG 7 Dec 1973 [12 Dec 1972 2 June 1973] 56863/73 Heading C2C 2 - Hydroxynaphthalene - 3 - carboxylic acid is prepared by reaction of sodium #-naphthalate with CO 2 at elevated temperature in an organic reaction medium in two stages. In the first stage the sodium #-naphthalate is heated to at least 180‹ C. in the presence of (a) an organic compound containing at least two aromatic rings connected together via a non-aromatic carbon atom or a chain of two or more non- aromatic carbon atoms, and/or (b) an aromatic ether having at least one aromatic ring connected to an ether oxygen atom which is in turn attached to a non-aromatic carbon atom, while in the second stage the product of the first stage is reacted with CO 2 at a temperature of at least 180 degrees and the thus formed salt of 2- hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid is converted into 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid by reaction with acid.
