Abstract

1443937 Revolver for wrapping machine A SCHMERMUND 30 Oct 1973 [30 Nov 1972] 55334/72 Heading B8C In a revolver, forming part of a machine for wrapping block-shaped articles as described in Specification 1,440,923 and comprising a plurality of article receiving compartments 21/22 mounted for rotation with a shaft 55a/56a, each compartment 21/22 includes an outer wall 327 and a perforate inner wall 326 defining a suction chamber 331, and the dimensions of each compartment 21/22 are greater in a direction radial to the axis of the shaft than in a direction tangential, at the compartment, to a circle passing through all of the compartments and having its centre on the axis. Suction is supplied to individual suction chambers 331 through respective longitudinal passages 301 in the shaft and a valve arrangement disconnects the suction to the chambers when they are located within a predetermined range of their rotational movement. In one embodiment, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), suction is supplied to a chamber (353) in a stationary boss (351) which is coupled to an end of the shaft 55a/56a. The boss (351) includes a valve member (354) engaging the end face of the shaft to close in turn the longitudinal passages 301 which open into the boss vacuum chamber (353) at said end face. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, the longitudinal passages 301 communicate with respective control channels 302, each of which extends around part only of the shaft periphery and is isolated from the other channels by O-rings 303/323. The channels 302 have the same peripheral length but the ends of each channel are angularly staggered in relation to the respective ends of the other channels, Figs. 3-6, (not shown). The compartment suction chambers 331 are connected to a suction source when the channels 302 are so angularly positioned to be in communication with respective passages 312 in a support bearing member 58/59 for the shaft 55a/56a. The revolver may have four, six, eight, twelve or sixteen compartments and is constructed of lightweight material.
