Abstract
1410273 Rotary positive-displacement machine GENERAL MOTORS CORP 29 March 1973 [24.April 1972] 15099/73 Heading F1F A rotary positive-displacement machine of the type in which a multi-apex rotor 18 is mounted for planetary movement in a housing 10, comprises an air pressure source 48 and means including passages 44 in each apex seal 33 for supplying air from source 48 to the outer surface of seal 33 to provide an air cushion by which the seal is separated by the internal peripheral wall 14 of housing 10. Source 48 communicates via line 54 with an axial port 52 in end-plate 17 which leads into an annular chamber 50 in plate 17. Chamber 50 is coaxial with shaft 23 and continuously communicates with an annular chamber 55 in the axial end-face of the rotor, the chamber 55 communicating with a chamber 43 behind each seal 33 via respective passages 58. Since the apex seals experience differing pressures from the working chambers which they round during 'the planetary movement, each air pressure cushion can be sequentially connected to sources of varying pressure Figs 5 and 6 (not shown).
