Abstract

1443923 Delayed and sustained release compositions M SHEPARD 16 July 1973 [2 May 1972] 20412/72 Heading A5B Delayed release pharmaceutictal compositions in dosage unit form comprises two or more portions of pharmaceutically active material, each of which is individually provided with a retardant coating comprising a different water-insoluble normally solid fatty acid, each of the fatty acids having a melting point above body temperature and each fatty acid having a different melting point to the other(s). The fatty acid may be a saturated fatty acid such as lauric, myristic, stearic, behenic, lignoceric, palmitic or aracadic acid. The composition may also contain a portion of pharmaceutically active material having a coating of fatty acid having a melting point below body temperature i.e. capric acid. The composition may be in the form of granules which may be contained in a sachet or gelatine capsule, or compressed together with a tablet lubricant. The pharmaceutically active material may be selected from herbs, antihistamines, antibiotics, cardiovascular agents, central nervous system depressants, central nervous system stimulants, enzymes, gastrointestinal agents, haematological agents, immunological agents, hormones, renal acting and oedema reducing agents, nutrients and/or skeletal muscle relaxants.
