Abstract

1443824 Shrink-wrapped packages IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Jan 1974 [30 March 1973] 15403/73 Heading B8C A package, containing merchandise such as cauliflowers, cabbage, or tomatoes, comprises a framework composed of one, or more, skeletal units shrink-wrapped to increase the rigidity of the framework. The framework may be sleeve wrapped, or completely enveloped in the film and, it may be formed of wood, wire, or preferably injection moulded plastics such as polyethylene or, polypropylene which may have a filling of talc or glass fibre. When the framework consists of two or more skeletal units the shrink wrap holds the skeletal units together. The skeletal units may each be provided with a skeletal lid, and be formed of wall frames which are either hinged together or interlocking. The web of shrinkable material preferably takes the form of an oriented plastics, or perforated film. Alternatively, the web may consist of oriented extruded, or embossed, net. The web could also be formed of woven, or knitted, materials. The container may be of any shape, but cube, cuboid, regular hexagonal prism, and cylindrical shapes are preferred. As shown in Fig. 1, a single skeletal unit forming the framework has a base 11 with cross struts 12, and sides 13, and ends 14 with respective horizontal struts 17. After merchandise, not shown has been introduced, through an open top, into the framework a sleeve of polyethylene is shrunk, by heating, onto the framework. Twenty-seven skeletal units are stacked in rectangular formation, Fig. 2 not shown, and are shrink-wrapped. Cylindrical and hexagonal skeletal units are described with reference respectively to Figs. 3, and 4, not shown.
