Abstract

1439075 Automatic control of air/fuel ratio ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 14 Sept 1973 [15 Sept 1972] 43211/73 Heading G3R [Also in Division F1] A fuel proportioning unit for an internal combustion engine comprises a fuel chamber 5 from which fuel is drawn through a passage 14, terminating in a nozzle 13 which co-operates with a metering needle 12, to mix with air flowing through an induction pipe 1, the proportion of fuel to air being also dependent on the pressure in the fuel chamber 5, this pressure being varied in dependence on the output signal from an oxygen measuring probe 19 which projects into the exhaust pipe 18, the output signal being used to control two valves 16 and 17 which control communication between the fuel chamber and points upstream and downstream respectively of the choke region created by a piston 8 in which the needle 12 is mounted. An air storage chamber 28 is connected to the fuel chamber 5 to increase its volume in order to smooth out pulsations occurring in the inlet pipe 1. Probe 19 is a solid electrolyte tube, coated on its inner and outer surfaces with platinum electrodes and connected through Schmidt triggers 20 and 21 and amplifiers 23 and 24 to the valves 16 and 17, so that the valve 16 is only open when the probe output is below a predetermined voltage and the valve 17 is only open when the output is above a second, higher, predetermined voltage. When valve 16 is open the pressure in the fuel chamber increases and additional fuel is provided to restore the fuel/air ratio of the mixture supplied to the engine to a stoichiometric value, and when the valve 17 is open, the depression on the downstream side of the choke lowers the fuel chamber pressure to reduce the amount of fuel drawn off. Restrictors 25 in the pipes 6 and 7 and in a connecting pipe 26 reduce the pressures existing at the valves.
