1438115 Locks LOWE & FLETCHER Ltd 3 Oct 1973 [3 Nov 1972 23 Dec 1972] 50706/ 72 and 59579/72 Heading E2A Accidental shooting of a steering column locking bolt 15 is prevented by a spring- loaded retaining bolt 31 whose nose engages under surface 33 of the main bolt until it is retracted by a shoulder 38 on the lock cylinder, the lock cylinder sliding outwardly towards the key-hole 23 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as the 'key is withdrawn. As the key is inserted, it meets roller 39, and further insertion pushes the cylinder inwardly, causing a plunger 41 to slide off a ramp 42, Fig. 3, thus allowing the roller to clear the keyway. Cam surfaces (not shown) on the casing part 17 and the barrel extension 24, ensure that the barrel is in its fully inward position during unlocking, and it is retained in this position until turned back to the unlocking position, by plunger 46 in groove 48. In a modification (not shown) the roller 39 is replaced by a lever having one arm projecting across the keyway and another engaging the barrel to hold it against outward movement.
