Abstract

1437437 Apparatus for directing water entering a propeller CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES DE NORMANDIE 9 Aug 1973 [13 June 1973] 37865/73 Heading B7V To prevent cavitation occurring on a propeller whose axis of rotation is arranged obliquely to the general direction of water flow past it a nozzle is mounted upstream of the propeller on a bearing supporting the shaft so as to be coaxial therewith and to deflect water toward the central part of the propeller, the deflected water flow being substantially parallel to the shaft. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) the nozzle either comprises a cylinder 16 whose peripheral wall is streamlined, or a plurality of cylinders arranged concentrically to one another and to the shaft. Alternatively the nozzle may comprise a frusto-conical member extending rearwardly from the bearing (Fig. 3, not shown).
