Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A marine jet propulsion unit comprises an axial flow water impeller 10, an impeller duct 12 terminating in a frusto-conical section 13 closely surrounding the impeller, the diameter of the frusto-conical section decreasing in the downstream direction, an inlet section 14 the diameter of which increases steeply and uniformly from the frusto-conical section and a cylindrical outlet section 15. The individual lengths of the inlet and outlet sections are not greater than that of the frusto-conical section and the boss 17 of the impeller increases in diameter in the downstream direction. Jet flow control means and deflectors of various types are described for the steering ahead and astern of marine craft in each of which embodiments the impeller and conical duct utilize the above configuration.
