Abstract
1437229 Thermal regenerators NOEL PENNY TURBINES Ltd 14 Aug 1974 [5 Sept 1973] 41706/73 Heading F4K A disc-like matrix for a rotary regenerative heat exchanger comprises a plurality of blocks 2 of a porous ceramic material, e.g. silicon nitride, having substantially flat side faces arranged side-by-side with adjacent side faces abutting and held together by a key member 6 inserted into grooves 4 formed in each of the abutting side faces. As shown the grooves of adjacent blocks co-operate to define longitudinally extending passages of dumb-bell shape crosssection adapted to receive correspondingly shaped key members 6; the key members and grooves may be tapered. Instead of the key members and passages being of dumb-bell shaped cross-section, cylindrical pins and semicylindrical grooves forming cylindrical passages may be employed. The blocks may be of hexagonal, triangular or square form and may be bonded together in addition to being keyed. The matrix may be made up from cured silicon nitride blocks or from "green" silicon-based blocks which are nitrided after assembly, the nitriding process forming bonds between abutting side faces of the blocks. A central shaft 1 passing through the matrix may be keyed to adjacent blocks 2 via key members 6.
