Abstract

1435850 Toner compositions KONISHIROKU PHOTO INDUSTRY CO Ltd 22 May 1974 [31 May 1973] 22776/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Toners for electrostatic image developers comprise (a) a colorant, (b) a styrene homopolymer or copolymer of molecular weight at least 3000 containing at least 25 weight per cent of styrene and (c) 1 to 30 per cent by weight of the toner of a thermoplastic hydrocarbon petroleum resin of molecular weight 500 to 3000 and softening point 70‹ to 150‹ C. containing defined carbocyclic units. The styrene may be copolymerized with p-chlorostyrene, vinylnaphthalene, olefins, vinyl esters, vinyl halides, acrylic and methacrylic esters and nitriles, acrylamide, vinyl ethers, alkenyl ketones and N-vinyl heterocyclic compounds; or the styrene polymer may be admixed with polymers of these monomers, rosin-modified phenolic resins, oil-modified epoxy resins, polyurethane resins, cellulose ether resins, polyether resins, low molecular weight polyolefin resins, waxes and fatty acid metal salts. The toners may be mixed with carriers, e.g. iron powder and glass beads, to form developers. Examples describe toners comprising colorants, petroleum resins and (1) styrene resin, (2) styrene resin and polypropylene, (3) styrene/butyl methacrylate copolymer and polypropylene, (4) styrene/ stearyl methacrylate copolymer, (5) styrene/ butyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer and wax and (6) styrene/butyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer and polyethylene.
