Abstract
1434038 Heat treating welds HUGHES TOOL CO 4 July 1973 [7 July 1972] 31775/73 Heading C7N A weld and its associated heat-affected zone are heated to a temperature above critical, quenched at a rate which hardens them across the cross-section without causing cracking to provide a strength at least equal to that of one of the components welded and are then finally tempered. In a preferred embodiment the weld zone in steel is initially cooled below the transformation temperature, heated to 1750-1800‹F, quenched to 600 F or below in 1“ minutes and tempered at 1175‹F. Quenching may be by oil, water, air or a water mist. The process is particularly applicable to flash butt welds between drill pipes and their connectors. Apparatus comprises an annular nozzle ring 17 and a perforated internal mandrel 29 each connected to a compressor.
