Abstract
1387440 Heat treating steel pipe AJAX MAGNETHERMIC CORP 18 Aug 1972 [8 Sept 1971] 38742/72 Heading C7N Large diameter steel pipes are treated by passage sequentially through induction coil 17 and closely spaced quench unit 18, the pipe being supported on either side of and adjacent to the treatment zone by restraining roll stands 16, 19 each of which contains at least three rolls 20, 41, 42 spaced circumferentially round the pipe to apply radial pressure thereto. The weld bead may be pre-heated by inductor 15 so that on hardening a uniform temperature is obtained, while the quench unit may include both an external spray ring 22 and an internal head 23 cantilevered on pipe 24. After the pipe has completely passed through the treatment zone it is reversed and returned through the inductor for tempering; alternatively the pipe may be shifted transversely and then returned on a parallel track, through a second inductor or in a continuous process may be passed directly to a second inductor located between two more support roll stands. In another embodiment a single supply conveyor passes pipes alternately to two parallel heattreatment lines.
