Abstract

1432770 Magnesium silicates LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Oct 1973 [14 Nov 1972] 52416/73 Heading C1A A process for the synthesis of a hydrous magnesium silicate having a crystal structure similar to that of hectorite comprises forming a precipitate of silica in aqueous suspension of magnesium carbonate and maintaining the precipitate in the wet state and treating it hydrothermally in the presence of excess Na or Li compound. Synthetic hydrous magnesium silicates having a crystal structure similar to hectorite and having the general formula where a is 4À95-5À7, b is from 0 to 1À05, c is from 0 to <2, a+b+c is from >4 to <8, y is from 0 to <4, z=12-2a-b-c, M is Na<SP>+</SP> or Li<SP>+</SP> and having a Bingham Yield Value, as a 2% dispersion in tap water of 50-250 dyns./ cm.<SP>2</SP> and having a cation exchange capacity of 25-50 m. eq./100 g. are prepared.
