Abstract

1382340 Precipitated silica SOC FRANCAISE DES SILICATES SPECIAUX SIFRANCE 28 April 1972 [4 Nov 1971] 19880/72 Heading C1A In a method for producing silicas having a specific surface area of 100 to 600 in.<SP>2</SP>/g. which does not vary with drying by the action of strong acid on a sodium silicate, the addition of the acid to the silicate is interrupted upon 1 to 3 occasions, the first interruption taking place after the SiO 2 /Na 2 O molar ratio reaches a value of 5À5. Preferably the first interruption occurs when the ratio is 5À7 to 7 and the second when the ratio is 10 to 25. The rate of addition of the acid may be such that the variation of the alkalinity of the medium as a function of time is constant. The constant may be different in one acid adding phase from that in another. The process may be continuous or discontinuous. Preferably the silicate concentration is 100 to 200 g./litre with a SiO 2 /Na 2 O molar ratio of 1 to 4, the acid has a concentration such that the final SiO 2 concentration is 50 to 100 g./litre, the temperature is 40‹ to 95‹ C. and the total time for the acid addition is 40 to 180 minutes, the interruptions lasting 5 to 30 minutes.
