Abstract

1430653 Ladder escape apparatus TOYO SHUTTER CO Ltd 28 March 1973 [12 April 1972] 14977/73 Heading E1S Apparatus for escaping from a building comprises a stairway assembly of platforms 16 and ladders 19 hung from a suspension base 5 which is mounted on the roof of a building, the stairway assembly being unfoldable downwardly and foldable upwardly by elongate flexible elements, e.g. ropes 23, 24, operable by drive means, e.g. power-operated winches 8, on the base 5; the platforms 16 are interconnected by hangers 17, e.g. chains, and the ladders are attached foldably between the platforms. A further collapsible hanger 14 connects the top platform to projecting arms 11 of the base 5. The ladders 19 are pivotally and slidably connected at their ends to the platforms, and each ladder comprises treads pivotally connected to two pairs of stiles to form a parallelogram linkage. The ropes 23, 24 are fastened to the bottom platform and extend through holes in the others and over pulleys 12 to the winches 8. The base 5 is mounted for lateral movement on a trolley 3 running on a track 2 along the edge of the roof. The. winch motor is connected to fire alarms in the building so as to operate automatically.
