Abstract
1430070 Electric incandescent lamp THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Aug 1973 [11 Aug 1972] 37646/72 Heading H1F An electrical device having an enclosing sealed envelope is made by making a metallic mounting member having a plurality of fingers which are interconnected by a transverse brace, attaching one or more components of the device to the fingers, locating the mounting member and the component within the envelope, forming a seal between the envelope and the member with the brace inside the envelope and breaching the brace by a laser beam to isolate selected fingers mechanically and electrically from one another. The device may be a valve or an incandescent filament lamp having one or more filaments. In an embodiment the filaments 12, 13 for a tungsten-halogen lamp are joined by tangs 35, 36, 37 to the fingers 17, 18, 19 of a molybdenum member 16. A reflector 14 is joined to the member 16. The member may have an additional brace 45 which remains outside the envelope and is cut off after sealing of the envelope about thinned portions of 17, 18, 19. The portions 31, 32 are severed by a laser after the member has been sealed in an envelope. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the seal is made about molybdenum foils 20 which are welded to the end of the fingers. The laser beam may be split into two optically with each beam focused on a respective brace. The laser may be focused as an elliptical or rectangular beam on to a brace or a succession of holes may be made across a brace.
