1428383 Melt - spinning apparatus PLASTICISERS Ltd 22 May 1973 [23 May 1972] 24072/72 Heading B5B Apparatus for producing multifilaments comprises a multi-orifice spinneret (16, 17) means for feeding molten thermoplastic material thereto, cooled movable surface means (e.g. rotatable cooling roller 19) disposed to receive and contact extruded filaments and means (e.g. nozzle 30, Fig. 2) directed at the outer surface of the roller, and having an elongated nozzle opening 31 extending over the full length of roller 19 for blowing cooling gas on to the filaments substantially in the region where the filaments come into contact with said surface means to cool the filaments and prevent them from sticking together on the movable surface means. The nozzle as shown has a chamfered outlet disposed to shield the filaments approaching the cooling roller and is pivotable about axis 34, so that in starting up, filaments may fall freely from the spinneret on to a tray 35. A deflector blade 33 is arranged adjacent the surface of the cooling roller shortly before the nip 32 where the filaments come on to the roller, to enhance the cooling of the free length of the filaments, between the spinneret and roller; this length is preferably not more than six inches. A preferred spinneret comprises a plate with a plurality of parallel straight rows of holes (29) therein (Fig. 3, not shown), the holes in the different rows being staggered relative to one another. In Fig. 1, filaments from spinneret 16 are combined with those from spinneret 17 and the bundle of filaments, each part of which has been treated with a spin finish at one of the rollers 21, passes between nip rollers 22 and 23 and is stretched while passing through hot air oven 11 between these rollers and haul-off mechanism 12, before being wound-up at bobbin winder 13.
