Abstract
1422678 Rotary piston machines J BOES 19 Oct 1973 [19 Oct 1972] 48786/73 Heading F1F An intermittent abutment machine comprises two coaxial inner and outer shafts carrying relatively oscillating pistons and a gear train which includes two intermeshing quasi-elliptical gearwheels and a differential gear mechanism to produce these relative oscillations and to transmit power to or from the machine. As described the machine is an I.C. engine and a quasi-elliptical gear 12 is keyed to the outer shaft 2 and meshes with a similar elliptical gear 13 keyed to a layshaft 14. A circular gear 15 is keyed to the inner shaft 1 and meshes with a similar gear-wheel 16 keyed to the auxiliary shaft 14. A gear-wheel 17 of the differential mechanism is fixed to the outer shaft 2 and a second gear-wheel 18 of the mechanism is fixed to the inner shaft 1. A carrier pinion 19 of the mechanism carrying planetary pinions meshing with the gears 17, 18 drives an output shaft 21 of the engine via a pinion 20. A pair of diametrically opposed sector shaped blades 3, (4) are fixed to the inner shaft 1 by way of flange 7 which forms one end wall of an annular housing and rotates with the shaft 1. A similar pair of pistons 5, (6) are fixed to a similar flange 8 which forms a second end wall of the housing end rotates with the outer shaft 2. The pistons are hollow and their interiors communicate with the exterior of the housing via openings 7, 91 in the associated flange for ingress of air for cooling and may also be in communication with the interior of a hollow shaft carrying the piston and having a cooling fluid inlet. The axial extending wall of the housing is constituted by a cylindrical part 10 with peripheral groove for cooling purposes. Inlet and exhaust ports in the housing have adjustable slide valves to adjust the dimensions of the ports in accordance with operating conditions.
