Abstract

1422029 Delivering sheets XEROX CORP 3 Dec 1973 [4 Dec 1972] 55957/73 Heading B8R A sheet sorter comprises two bins 51, 53, each containing a plurality of trays 59, and copy sheets fed from a xerographic copier are directed to one or other of the bins according to the setting of a deflector 135. Sheets present in the bins are detected by the interruption of light beams from sources 306, 307 to detectors 303, 305. At the start of a sorting operation, if only one bin is empty, sheets are directed to that bin, if both are empty to the bin 55, and if neither are empty the operation is precluded. In each bin, sheets are directed to successive trays by deflectors 76, 123 actuated by individual solenoids, the arrangement being that when a sheet is detected, by a photo-electric device 80 or 127, entering a tray, the deflector for the next tray is set. The sorter can be programmed to act as a collator, a copy being made from each original and the copies being fed to successive trays, and then a further copy being made from each re-circulated original, and so on, so that each tray will finally contain one copy of each original, or to act as a stacker, several copies of one original being made and all fed to one tray, the deflectors being actuated when a desired number of copies have been counted, so that all copies of the next original are passed to the next tray and each tray finally contains a plurality of copies of one original.
