1421856 Wells &c SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 9 Feb 1973 6468/73 Heading E1F A suspension tool for suspending pipes in a well comprises a housing 2, 3 having a central axis, an axial passage 9 for passing pipes therethrough, wedge-shaped pipe-supporting elements 21 disposed around the central axis, each element being provided with a high-friction surface 22 facing and parallel with the central axis, the elements being slidably arranged on guiding surfaces 23 inclined to the axis, and actuating means 11 for displacing the elements along the guiding surfaces so as to vary the distance of the high-friction surfaces 22 from the central axis whilst maintaining the surfaces 22 parallel to the axis. Coupling means 5 and 7 are provided for attachment of the tool to wellhead equipment. A piston 11 is displaced downwardly or upwardly by the application of pressurised fluid through conduits 17 or 19, respectively, to grip or release a pipe in the passage 9. Alternatively, each element 21 may have an operating piston, or there may be sets of elements each with a piston. The pipe-supporting elements 21 may have resilient members 24 vulcanised or otherwise connected therebetween, and these members can be of various shapes, Figs. 3 to 5 (not shown) and be interconnected on either side of each element via recesses in its front and rear faces, thus forming a seal between the elements 21 and a pipe gripped thereby. The members 24 may be omitted and the elements 21 flexibly connected to the piston 11.
